About Tbilisi State Medical University

Situated in the Tbilisi city, the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi Medical Institute was established in the year 1918. Later it developed into the Faculty of Medicine within the Tbilisi State University (TSU) in 1930. Eventually it was renamed to Tbilisi State Medical University in the year 1992. Thereafter the University started functioning as an independent educational foundation. Today, this 96 year old institution stands as the largest and the only Government Medical University for the whole country of Georgia.

During its course of existence, the University has produced more than 45,000 doctors and collaborated with a majority of the hospitals in Tbilisi. Recognized by the European Union Ministry of Education, the Georgian Ministry of Education and Science, the Association of Medical Education of Europe, the European Association of International Education and the Georgian Ministry of Health and Labour Affairs, the University is acknowledged by the World Health Organization, UNESCO, Schwaitser World Academy, Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

Faculty and Courses

The University has six faculties which are as follows:

  • Faculty of Medicine
  • Faculty of Stomatology
  • Faculty of Pharmacy
  • Faculty of Public Health
  • Faculty of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
  • The programs offered by the University can be classified as follows:
  • One Step Medical Education Programs (under the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Stomatology)
  • Bachelor Programs (under the Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Public Health and Faculty of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation)
  • Master Programs (under the Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Public Health and Faculty of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation)
  • Doctoral programs (under the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Stomatology).

Staff and Teaching

The strength of the staff of the University varies from 150 to 200 which include administrative posts like the Rector, Vice-Rector, Chancellor and Professors.

Admission and Enrolment

The courses are offered in English, Russian and Georgian medium of instruction. For admissions, from amongst the citizens of USA, EU, Israel, UK and Ex-Soviet countries, the applicants may apply individually. Whereas, students from Africa, Asia and Central America have to apply through the respective network of legal representative-agencies that are working in their region. Applications are entertained even without qualifying the Unified National Examinations or Unified Master’s Examinations.

School graduates require the following documents for a valid application:

  • The completely filled application form (to be filled in Georgian upon arrival)
  • 4 photographs
  • Copy of Passport/National identity card
  • Apostle approved copy of document recognizing secondary general or equivalent education obtained from abroad
  • Original certificate validating that the candidate has been receiving general education abroad, for the past 2 years
  • A consent of the Tbilisi State Medical University certifying the possibility of the candidate’s enrolment at the University
  • Health Certificate

Note: All documents are to be translated into Georgian and must be notarized.

For students willing to be transferred to the University the following documents are necessary:

  1. The filled up application form
  2. 4 photographs
  3. Copy of Passport/National identity card
    Note: Applications of candidates with no citizenship are to be accompanied with Residence Registration Certificate instead.
  4. A document certifying that the candidate has been living abroad for the past 2 years or more
  5. A document to certify that the person is presently studying at Higher Educational Institution abroad, recognized by that country. This certificate must convey complete information about the pass courses, with lecture hours/credits and grades received.
  6. A consent of the Tbilisi State Medical University certifying the possibility of the candidate’s enrolment at the University
  7. Health Certificate and Vaccination Card

Note: All documents are to be translated into Georgian language and must be notarized. All International students are bound to submit their proof of immunization.

For obtaining their medical insurance in Georgia, the students have to undergo a medical examination including X-Ray examination of the Thorax, test for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and viral Hepatitis Diagnostic Tests, psychoneurological consultation etc. This may cost the candidate around £100. Before applying to University, applicant should pass his foreign educational Documents for recognition to the National Centre for Educational Quality Enhancement
