Who may take the Goethe-Institut exams?
The Goethe-Institut’s tests are open to anybody interested, regardless of citizenship. They are intended to demonstrate proficiency in German as a second and/or foreign language.

Are you allowed to leave the room during the examination?
You may leave the room for an appropriate amount of time (to use the restroom). This absence will be mentioned in the “Exam Administration Report.”

How frequently may I take an examination?
You are allowed to retake the entire test as frequently as necessary. See Terms and conditions for exam administration for information about retaking the exam or a portion of it.

Does my test or the certificate expire?
Goethe-Zertifikats A1–C2 are perpetual. However, a lot of organizations and corporations want the certificate to have been issued no more than two years ago. The Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom and the modification of the exam offers on the level C2 starting on January 1, 2012, will render the certificates of the Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (ZOP), das Kleine Deutsche Sprachdiplom (KDS), and das Große Deutsche Sprachdiplom (GDS) void.

What should I do if my certificate slips from the email or is lost somewhere?
No more will be provided. The testing facility where you took the exam will provide a replacement document for a nominal price if it was taken within the past 10 years.
